It's taken the best part of two hours, but the Aussies have their wicket. But they're son far behind, it'san irrelevance.

WICKET!! Tim Bresnan c Clarke b Johnson 35

Something for the Aussies to cheer, at last! Bresnan edges one that slanted across his body, edging to Clarke at first slip.

167th over: England 584-7 (Prior 111, Bresnan 35)

This is now the highest eight wicket partnership for England at Sydney. Prior and Bresnan pass the previous high set in 1909 by a pair which included Johnny William Henry Tyler Douglas. JWHT Douglas was a member of my local cricket team, Wanstead CC. That's a fact, for you. A fearsome boxer who was the victim of some abuse for his slow play - he was nicknamed Johnny Wont Hit Today Douglas by the Aussies. Maiden for new bowler, Hilfenhaus.

166th over: England 584-7 (Prior 111, Bresnan 35)

Hoooraaaaay! The Barmy Army bellow their delight as Mitchell Johnson is introduced into the action. Clarke has seen enough and decides to take the new ball. But it's a case of the same old story, 11 off the over with the pick of the shots a delightful cover drive. England's lead is now 304.

165th over: England 573-7 (Prior 105, Bresnan 31)

No sign of the new ball, yet. I fancy it's got to show it's face some time soon - the spinners are looking just about ready to give up.

164th over: England 571-7 (Prior 104, Bresnan 31)

Shot! Back-cut from Prior brings another three and his score moves to within 27 of his all-time high score. He might pass that certain milestone before lunch, such is the rate at which he's scoring.

Aussie-bashing: Bresnan thumps a huge shot over the fielders to the rope

163rd over: England 567-7 (Prior 101, Bresnan 30)

100 runs for Matt Prior! Stretching to thump a wide delivery through covers, Prior finds the gap and leap with joy as he passes three figures. Worth noting a few Aussies took the time to congratulate the centurion after they ignored the two yesterday.

162nd over: England 561-7 (Prior 95, Bresnan 30)

Shot(s)! Bresnan opens his arms up and thumps Smith over cow twice int hat over for a pair of boundaries. England's lead is now a mammoth 281 runs.

161st over: England 551-7 (Prior 94, Bresnan 21)

A deuce of sweeps from Prior, angling Beer down the leg side moves his score in the mid-90s. How's the ticker, sunshine?

160th over: England 547-7 (Prior 90, Bresnan 21)

Time for a bowling change, Steve Smith is launched in to try and pull a rabbit from the hat. Smith floats a few up, towards middle and leg, a bit untidy if you ask me. Seven from the over and the new ball is now available. Super.

159th over: England 540-7 (Prior 87, Bresnan 21)

So, when to declare? General consensus is at lunch, but I fancy Strauss - being Strauss - will eat up a bit of time in the afternoon session, too. Not sure there will be enough time for Prior to beat his previous top score of 131 v West Indies in 2009.

Sliding home: Beer tries to direct the ball onto the stumps as Prior makes his ground comfortably

158th over: England 539-7 (Prior 85, Bresnan 18)

Shot! After more than an hour of refusals, Bresnan has seen enough, opens up the face of his bat and flashes Siddle back through point for four. There follows a none-to-shabby punch through the on side for a further three. Eight from the over and the 50 partnership comes up, too.

157th over: England 531-7 (Prior 84, Bresnan 11)

What on earth is that? A run for Bresnan! Bres clips to mid-off for a single which keeps him on strike.

156th over: England 529-7 (Prior 83, Bresnan 10)

Bresnan is there in body but not in mind it would seem. He's barely playing a shot out there. Here's a thought - wouldn't this be the perfect time to lay a claim to replace Collingwood? Bres can certainly bat and he's earned a deserved reputation for his bowling on this tour... One from the over.

155th over: England 528-7 (Prior 82, Bresnan 10)

Beer drifts a few outside off, trying to tempt Prior into a waft but the wicketkeeper looks well set. Three from the over.

154th over: England 525-7 (Prior 80, Bresnan 9)

Is it me or does Matt Prior have an Australian accent? He yelps 'yeh mate' to call Bresnan for a single with a twang that could have come from a resident of Ramsay Street. Bowling change for Australia - even Sid looks short of enthusiasm today. Just one from the over and it is now time for a wee drinks break.

153rd over: England 524-7 (Prior 79, Bresnan 9)

This has been a rather sedate little spell.  Ber continues to turn his arm over for another maiden.

152nd over: England 524-7 (Prior 79, Bresnan 9)

A series of dots for Johnson - that's a maiden.

151st over: England 524-7 (Prior 79, Bresnan 9)

Any suggestion that Sir Beef would back down following his 'cheat' allegation directed at Phil Hughes is soon forgotten. 'I stand by what I say, when have I ever backed down?' Bowling change - Michael beer enters  the fray in Hilfenhaus's stead, just one off the over.

150th over: England 523-7 (Prior 78, Bresnan 9)

'He bowls to the left, he bowls to the right...' You know the rest of that song by now. Johnson's in and chucks down some absolute filth to Prior who dispatches the ball to the boundary twice. Johnson = the most frustrating bowler in cricket.

149th over: England 514-7 (Prior 69, Bresnan 9)

A few choice words from Colly on his retirement: 'I'm proud of the fact that I've always given my all for the England Test team but I feel that this is the right time to leave Test cricket having reached some very special achievements, none more satisfying that retaining the Ashes in Australia.

'I also feel now is the time to ensure some of the younger players are given an opportunity at Test level as we have a wealth of talent pushing for places in the England Test team.'

Humble til the last - a true gent.

148th over: England 511-7 (Prior 66, Bresnan 9)

Enough's enough for Matt Prior who opens his body up and swings hard at a couple of Johnson's deliveries. He takes a couple over mid-off, swings four past the slip cordon and he chips one more up into the deep. Tidy stuff.

147th over: England 504-7 (Prior 59, Bresnan 9)

Bresnan clips a couple to midwicket to keep the scorecard ticking over. It has been a rather restrained srtart from the England pair. I thought it would be all swashbuckling drives and flashing blades. None of it, looks like they want they to hang around for some time yet.

146th over: England 502-7 (Prior 59, Bresnan 7)

Shot! Well, it was a pretty poor one to be fair, but Bresnan's streaky edge through vacant third slip runs to the boundary to bring up England's 500. The fourth time they've passed the figure on this tour - a record.

Paul Newman at the SCG writes: Well the big news of the morning is that Paul Collingwood has retired from Test cricket. It is the right thing to do. The timing is perfect. He has jumped before he was pushed but he deserves to go out on his own terms. A true warrior who will play on in the one-day game for now. It was nice to see his colleagues offering him their congratulations in the huddle this morning. He is a very popular member of the side.

145th over: England 496-7 (Prior 58, Bresnan 2)

The eulogies will continue to for Colly over the next couple of days. The consensus is that he has been a marvelous servant and very often the right man for to perform a variety of roles - England's handyman, if you will. Bresnan's off the mark with a clip through midwicket.

How many do you want? England continue to build their big lead on day four

144th over: England 493-7 (Prior 57, Bresnan 0)

Oooh! Bresnan gets a genuine edge on Johnson's away swinger but it pitches just short of Haddin behind the stumps. Sure sign this pitch is dying. The 60-odd over old ball isn't helping things, either. Maiden

143rd over: England 493-7 (Prior 57, Bresnan 0)

Bumble's wearing the same shit as yesterday, apparently. Don't worry, I've got his email address, I'll send him a few choice words later! Ben Hilfenhaus starts with a few looseners. Prior guides a short one down towards third man for a couple.

142nd over: England 489-7 (Prior 55, Bresnan 0)

Colly's best moment, then? His double hundred on the last tour Down Under? Nah. For me it was his rear-guard action in Cardiff which helped secure a draw and build the platform for the series win. Ironic cheers from the England fans in early as Mitchell Johnson  takes the attack up first thing and Prior takes a single through cover point.

ENGLAND RESUME ON 488-7 IN REPLY TO AUSTRALIA'S FIRST-INNINGS TOTAL OF 280

10.58pm: Players are out, we're set for day four. You ready? Let's go...

10.55pm: Breaking news for you, Paul Collingwood has just announced his retirement from Test cricket. Hugs and handshakes out in the middle before the start of play for Brigadier Block. And he'll be missed. He's averaged 40 in Tests and he's been a great servant to the team since his debut against Sri Lanka in 2003.

10.50pm: I'll be honest and tell you that when I saw the contentious 'dismissal' of Cook yesterday, you could clearly see the ball bounce up and into Hughes's hand. It looked suspect but the Aussie opener is adamant he's no cheat. Read Paul Newman's verdict on the day's hot topic here.

10.45pm: The SCG was awash with pink yesterday as cricket showed it's support for the McGrath Foundation. Bumble was delighted with the efforts of both local and travelling fans - he was also most interested in a pre-match pigeon race. More from David Lloyd here.

10.36pm: No doubt Cook and Bell were the big stories of the day yesterday, but the 'cheat' storm which erupted following Phil Hughes's 'catch' continues to rumble on and on.

Sir Ian Botham believes the fielder knew what he was doing. But Nasser Hussain isn't so sure. Read Nasser's Daily Dossier here.

10.30pm: Evening everyone and welcome along to Sportsmail's coverage on day four of the fifth Ashes Test from the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Have you ever wondered what the most common phrase used on this tour has been? I'll tell you anyway: 'Another day of domination for England.'

Yesterday was no different as England dominated, this time with the bat.

This match was hanging in the balance at the start of play on day three, but a huge hundred from Alastair Cook (189) and a maiden Ashes ton for Ian Bell (115) has taken this match out of the Aussie's reach.

It's not too far fetched to say this Test and series could end today. Maybe.

Once again, the action starts early today, play will commence at 11pm. In the meantime, why not send me a little note to let me know just how much you're enjoying this Test so far: tom.bellwood@dailymail.co.uk

The stage is set: England today return to the venue where they were soundly6 beaten four years ago
