North Queensland 1 Newcastle 3

THE Newcastle Jets flew closer to the A-League's top six after defeating the North Queensland Fury 3-1 at Dairy Farmers Stadium last night.

A crowd of 4315 saw the Jets hit the Fury with two early goals from Ruben Zadkovich and Labinot Haliti, before inflicting a final blow courtesy of Ryan Griffiths in the 70th minute. Mark Hughes's penalty goal came too little too late for the Fury during injury time.

The Jets now pass Wellington Phoenix on the ladder, moving into seventh position for now, only two points outside the finals' cut-off. The Fury stay at the foot of the ladder.

The Jets were gifted a goal in the 12th minute with Adam Casey giving away a free kick just outside the 18-yard box that allowed Zadkovich to get away a low shot that slipped past a diving Usai and into the back of the net to make the score 1-0. Then, only two minutes later, a wayward Fury pass from Andre Kilian found Haliti, who one-on-one with keeper Usai, executed to make it 2-0.

North Queensland came out after half-time looking to salvage some pride, but the Jets crushed their hopes with a final blow in the 70th minute as Tarek Elrich drifted in a perfect cross to an unmarked Griffiths, who tapped in to give Newcastle a 3-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Central Coast coach Graham Arnold believes in-form Wellington Phoenix are a huge threat to his side's hopes of a top-two finish when the sides play at Bluetongue Stadium tonight.

''They are a tough team to play against,'' Arnold said. ''We lost 2-0 to them over there, then beat them 3-0 in what I think was probably our best display of the season over 90 minutes,'' he said.
