Jan. 8 (Bloomberg) -- Mexican police found 15 decapitated bodies in the city of Acapulco today, the latest incident amid escalating drug-related violence.

The bodies of men between the ages of 25 and 30 were found on a sidewalk in front of a shopping mall in the city known for its beach resorts, Guerrero state said in a statement on its website.

Police first arrived on the scene early this morning when a car was reported on fire, the statement said. The press office at the Guerrero state attorney general's office declined to comment on its investigation of the case.

The incident in Acapulco comes a day after the mayor of Zaragoza in Coahuila state was found dead with gunshot wounds.

Mexico last year reported the highest toll of drug-related deaths since President Felipe Calderon took office four years ago and began deploying troops in a battle against cartels. Mexican Attorney General Arturo Chavez last month reported 30,196 such deaths between December 2006 and November 2010, and 12,456 in the first 11 months of last year.
