Out of touch, out of time, out of work! Gray and Keys got too comfortable

As well as half the world's population, Andy Gray must have really upset someone. It will come as no surprise to anybody who has been in the company of a man who is just that bit too pleased with himself.

Just that bit too eager to listen to his own opinion but nobody else's. Not unless you've played the game anyway.

Kings dethroned: Gray and Keys

Kings dethroned: Gray and Keys

That was certainly a common gripe among the football-writing community, with Gray almost coming to blows with one much-respected reporter who once dared object to his arrogance.

Clearly, he has created a few enemies at Sky as well, because the lust for his blood has been nothing short of ravenous these past few days.

No matter that he had been such a central figure in Sky's success story for the best part of 20 years.

The first chance they got they went for his jugular, releasing not one but two more videos that gave them enough ammunition to dismiss him.

He has, of course, damaged the Sky brand with his deeply offensive remarks.

As, of course, has his co-presenter Richard Keys. Two men who Dame Judi Dench, in her role as Ian Fleming's 'M', might have called sexist, misogynist dinosaurs.

But they remain big shoes to fill when Gray has long proved himself such a skilled football analyst; when Keys and Gray had become so popular with (some of) their viewers prior to their remarks about Sian Massey.

Earlier this season it was the BBC's Match of the Day programme that was coming under pressure to change.

Prompted by stinging criticism from Stan Collymore, Messrs Lineker, Hansen and Lawrenson were being told it was time to move off the sofa and give someone else a go.

Until last weekend, Keys and Gray remained very much in their comfort zone. Kings of all they surveyed.

But that was the problem. They got too comfortable, too big for their boots and, in the end, exposed themselves as the men who were out of touch.

As Gray discovered yesterday, what goes around comes around.
