VENUS Williams lasted just four minutes on Rod Laver Arena last night with a groin injury ending her Australian Open.

The No.4 seed was forced to retire midway through the second game of her third-round match with Germany's Andrea Petkovic.

Williams injured her groin during her second round match on Wednesday and arrived for last night's match with heavy strapping on her right leg.

She had her serve broken in the opening game of the match and then just two points later yelled out in pain after playing a shot from the baseline.

Williams immediately walked to the sideline and after a brief chat to the trainer, the former world No.1 retired for the first time at a Grand Slam and just the sixth time in her career.

"Obviously I just couldn't play, I couldn't move, it was just too painful," she said.

"Over the last 48 hours I did as much pain management and recovery as I could . . . . I was kind of hoping for some magic that I would recover.

"It's just super disappointing. It is not how I envisaged my Australian Open going."

The unfortunate injury continues a horror stretch for Williams who only played two tournaments - the US Open and Wimbledon - in the second half of the last year because of an on-going knee injury.

But the 30-year-old was adamant last night that retirment was not in her plans.

"I have got a lot of great tennis in me," she said. "I love my job."

After losing the opening set of her second round match against Sandra Zahlavova, Williams required treatment in the locker room but then returned with the area heavily strapped to win the final two sets of the match.

"I wasn't very happy, to say the least," she said after the match. "I mean, with an injury like that, you just don't know what to expect."

The demise of Venus comes after her younger sister Serena, the defending Open champion, was unable to make the trip to Australia this year because of a foot injury.

Petkovic, the tournament's No.30 seed, now plays Maria Sharapova in the fourth round.
