Domestic performance helped Chawla: Coach

Kanpur: While the inclusion of spinner Piyush Chawla in the Indian squad for the World Cup has raised a lot of eyebrows, his state coach has defended the selection, saying Chawla's domestic performances merited him a spot in the national team.
Uttar Pradesh coach Gyanendra Pandey said Chawla's inclusion was justified and not a surprise. "There is no surprise in his (Chawla) selection. He has been doing well in the domestic circuit and we were confident that he will make it to the squad," said Pandey, who has been working with the leg-spinner for the past four years.

"It is totally incorrect to raise question marks against his selection. Over the last couple of years he has not only performed in the Ranji trophy but his record in Duleep trophy and Deodhar trophy with both bat and the ball has also been very good. Considering his run at the domestic level, his selection could not have been overlooked," Pandey said.

The coach also mentioned Chawla's fine track record against foreign players. "He has been very effective against the foreigners and since the World Cup is in the sub-continent it will definitely help the spinners. If he gets a chance he will show his skills not only with the ball but also with the bat. He can also make significant contributions in the fielding department," Pandey said.

No comments: Srikkanth

Thiruvananthapuram: Meanwhile, selection committee chairman Kris Srikkanth refused to explain the exclusion of pace bowler S Sreesanth from the Indian team for the World Cup, only saying that the selection process was over. "The (selection) process is over. I have to take permission from BCCI if I want to make any comment on the selection," Srikkanth said after inaugurating work on a new stadium here.
