Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson offered a dire outlook on the status of NFL labor negotiations on Tuesday.

Richardson, a co-chair of the owners' labor committee, said he thinks reports of progress in the negotiations with the players' union are overblown.

"I personally am not as optimistic as some are that we are making much progress," Richardson said, via ESPN.

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft has said on several occasions that he feels a deal can be reached before the deadline.

But Richardson, who rarely speaks publicly, diverged sharply from those assessments.

"I'm not optimistic we are making a lot of progress," Richardson said.
